Staying safe and comfortable during a heatwave

With summer in full swing and temperatures on the rise, it's important to take extra care while working—especially if you're on shift in hot, busy environments.

Whether you’re on a ward, out in the community, or supporting patients in other vital roles, here are some top tips to help you stay cool, safe and well during the heatwave:

Stay hydrated

  • Aim to drink plenty of water throughout your shift
  • Keep a reusable water bottle nearby and top it up regularly
  • Avoid too much caffeine, as it can dehydrate you

Keep cool

  • Use fans, open windows (if safe to do so), and seek shade during breaks
  • Splash your wrists or neck with cool water for a quick refresh
  • Apply cool, damp cloths during your break if feeling overheated

Listen to your body

  • Look out for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, headache, muscle cramps or excessive sweating
  • If you feel unwell, alert a colleague and take a break as needed
  • Don’t hesitate to speak up if you're struggling, the wellbeing of our Bank Members is a top priority

Plan ahead

  • Take your breaks in cool or shaded areas where possible
  • Allow extra travel time during extreme temperatures to avoid stress and fatigue
  • Keep sun protection to hand if you're working outside: SPF, hat, and sunglasses.

Looking after yourself during extreme heat helps you to keep doing the incredible work you do—safely, comfortably and with care.

If you’re feeling the heat, be kind to yourself, look out for each other, and don’t hesitate to raise any concerns with your team.
