Our Bank Member survey: Induction and Redeployment

Our bank member survey induction and redeployment

One of the five priority areas identified from the Bank Member survey in 2024/25, was the need for more support around Trust and ward inductions, as well as a review in redeployment practices.

An appropriate induction and safe deployment are the foundations of good care. We know from your feedback the importance of ensuring that you have all the necessary information needed about the wards and environment you are working in.

Your feedback told us:

  • Although the vast majority of you receive a local induction when working on a new ward, we know there is still an opportunity to improve this aspect
  • You are sometimes asked to move to a different area upon arrival for a shift
  • On the whole, you felt confident in the work you are asked to do, but in some cases, there is a need for further support
  • There was a strong understanding overall for the skills our Bank Members bring, however, ensuring managers have access to all our Bank Member’s experience is key

How are we supporting the changes you need?

Standardising induction

  • We are working with our Client Trust teams to implement standardised induction checklists and handover protocols, so every Bank Member receives a consistent, meaningful introduction when joining a ward or service
  • We are embedding these new practices into Trust policies to ensure that comprehensive inductions remain a part of everyday practice.

Supporting redeployment

  • We are partnering with Trusts to deliver successful redeployment; ensuring Bank Members are only placed in areas where they can work that match their skills and experience
  • We are also supporting managers to better match staff skills to deployment decisions

What this means for you?

  • A comprehensive local induction when working in a new or unfamiliar ward or department
  • Working in areas where your skills and experience match
  • Greater clarity and consistency when starting shifts

To further support you, we are using staff IT systems to track whether inductions have been completed, giving NHSP and the Trust enhanced visibility on compliance. We’ll use this data to support continuous improvement. Working with our Client Trusts, we are also looking to enhance understanding of induction principles and processes to ensure these are further embedded into Trust policies.

Additionally, we are working on communicating and re-sharing induction checklists and processes, so client Trust teams and Bank Members are aware of best practice and up to date processes.

What’s next?

We are continuing to work Trust by Trust to embed even stronger induction processes and to refresh policies if necessary. Over time, we expect this will support Bank Members by reducing any uncertainty, improve patient care, and help you feel more confident and valued overall. By working together, we will ensure that every Bank Member has the preparation they need to succeed.
