Preceptorships

At NHS Professionals, we understand that the transition to registered nurse is both exciting and challenging. That’s why we’ve developed a structured Preceptorship programme designed to support newly registered nurses as they begin their journey. Through a blend of clinical guidance, peer support, and professional development, our programme helps build the confidence, capability, and resilience needed to deliver safe, high-quality, and compassionate care.

The NHS Professionals Preceptorship programme offers a range of benefits designed to set newly registered nurses up for long-term success. By providing a clear, consistent framework for clinical development and emotional support, the programme helps nurses grow in confidence, competence, and independence. It enhances job satisfaction, promotes a sense of belonging, and supports wellbeing - key factors in reducing early career burnout and improving staff retention. With structured guidance from experienced Preceptors and a collaborative, blended learning model, nurses are empowered to deliver safe, person-centred care from day one. 

The programme has two core components that can be taken separately or combined for a full Preceptorship programme:

Structured training and development sessions are delivered throughout the Preceptorship period by experienced Clinical Educators from the NHSP Academy, using a blended approach that includes webinars, group work, reflective practice, and Action Learning Sets.

 

Principles of Pastoral Care & Professional Development Support 

Designed to fully support Nurses and Midwives, this programme provides pastoral and professional support to develop competence and confidence in autonomous professional practice: 

  • Preceptorship policy and structured training package 
  • Rolling CPD programme as per planned schedule
  • Weekly virtual  ‘drop-in’  sessions for Preceptees for additional support and guidance
  • Nominated NHSP Academy Preceptor
  • Utilisation of NHSP Academy’s Preceptorship Practice Assessment Document
  • 1:1 meetings with Preceptees
  • Personalised Learning Plan
  • Monitor progress and escalate or initiate additional support where needed
  • Training and support sessions for Preceptor
