Start your NHS Career with the Gateway for Doctors

The Gateway for Doctors programme launched in 2019 and is part of Doctors Direct and NHS Professionals. The programme offers doctors who have completed their medical degrees in Europe a unique opportunity to gain the relevant, hands-on experience needed to start a career in the NHS.

How does it work?

The programme supports you in completing your junior doctor training at one of our programme partner Trusts across the UK. You will be supported by our dedicated team and your host Trust throughout, ensuring you have the best start to your NHS career.

How do I join?

You can register your interest to join the Gateway for Doctors Programme by completing an expression of interest form above.


What do I need to join?

You must be registered with the GMC and have completed your medical degree within the last 12 months.

Remember you must complete IELTS before you apply for GMC registration.


I’ve completed the Expression of Interest form, what happens next?

If your initial application is successful you will be invited to participate in a screening interview. This will be conducted via video conferencing.

If you are shortlisted after your interview, you will be invited to attend the Gateway for Doctors induction programme.


Why should I choose the Gateway for Doctors programme?

The programme supports you in completing your junior doctor training by giving you the opportunity to work and train in one of our programme partner NHS Trusts over a period of up to 24 months.

The training completed whilst on the programme counts towards your CREST certification allowing you to continue to specialty training.

This programme offers you the unique opportunity to begin working in an NHS hospital, receive further training and NHS experience. The programme will provide a solid foundation on which to start your career and take it to the next level.


How long will the Gateway Programme take to complete?

The Doctors Gateway programme can take up to 24 months to complete, dependant on completion of training modules, assessments and annual appraisals.


Where will I be completing the programme?

We have programme partners across the UK, those Trusts will interview and offer successful candidates a placement opportunity.


What support will I receive before starting my placement?

You will be required to attend an initial classroom based induction and training course hosted by NHS Professionals. Our programme partners may also have Trust specific inductions and training to support you as you start
