Agile Partnership Through Crisis And Change – our 2020/21 Annual Review

2020/21 has been an extraordinary year for the NHS, the wider healthcare economy and for healthcare workers across the system.

Throughout it all, NHS Professionals have continued to put people in places to care, maintaining focus on supporting the NHS’s workforce from the ward floor, through to regional and national levels.

Our pride in our work – and the achievements of our clients throughout this difficult time – shine out from the NHSP , which is now available to download.

The Annual Review offers a chance to reflect on a range of successes including:

  • Growing opportunities to work in the NHS – we welcomed 50,000 new Bank Members and 10,000 Doctors across programmes such as Test & Trace and the National Vaccination Programme
  • Stepping forward to support the pandemic – our Rapid Response campaign brought 20,000 nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and other key staff to the NHS front line in under three weeks
  • Continuing to build our capacity for international recruitment and bringing highly skilled staff into the NHS – despite travel restrictions we welcomed 1,000 overseas nurses to NHS Trusts

Despite this extraordinary year, we have not lost sight of how we can continue to improve our services to our clients in future.  For example:

  • We recently began work with NHS England and NHS Improvement to launch a new national ‘staffing pool’ programme that aims to preserve and redeploy the pandemic workforce into alternative NHS career pathways, including Integrated Care Systems
  • Using learnings from the pandemic, we have also strengthened our Vision 2022 transformation programme, including definitive work towards becoming the ‘National Bank’ of choice for flexible staffing in the health and care sectors and reducing the need for external agency support in the NHS.

This year has also seen us enhance the Health & Wellbeing resources available to our Bank Members.  This includes laying the foundations for an exciting new learning and career pathway support tool, helping our Bank Members create the flexible career that’s right for them.

Our CEO, Nicola McQueen, said:

"I am so proud of how much we have achieved this year, alongside our client Trusts and Bank Members.

"We have long said that, at NHSP, workforce is what we do.  We have proved that this year by bringing more flexible workers into the NHS than ever before, directly supporting patient care under testing circumstances.

“However, there is always more to be done, and our Annual Review sets out some bold ambitions for the future.  We will continue to adapt to the needs of our clients, candidates and the ever-changing healthcare system to best support the NHS and the patients it cares for."
