Registrants Working Without an Active NMC PIN

NHS Professionals requires all registrants to hold an active NMC PIN at all times when working in a clinical role. Working with a lapsed or inactive PIN is not permitted. This policy protects patient safety, ensures regulatory compliance and maintains professional standards.
Why does this matter?
A lapsed PIN creates serious regulatory, legal, and patient safety risks. NHSP operates a zero-tolerance approach. You must not work in any registered nursing, midwifery, or nursing associate role without an active PIN.
How can your PIN lapse?
The NMC charges you a fee annually or quarterly, depending on your plan. Direct debit payments are usually taken around 4 weeks before renewal. If payment fails, the NMC will send two reminder emails and then a final notice before removing you from the register.
Please note: reminders are electronic - you must keep your NMC email and contact details up to date, including checking your junk folder.
What should I do if my PIN has lapsed?
You must notify NHSP immediately through one of the following routes:
• Contact your local Client Services in-Trust team
• Call the Member Support Hub on 03332 407 552
If your PIN has lapsed, you will not be allowed to book any more shifts or perform any further clinical duties.
Please note, healthcare professionals found to be working with a lapsed PIN are referred to the NMC Registrar immediately.
You can only return to work once your NMC registration shows as active and NHSP’s People and Governance Team has approved your return, lifting any restrictions. Once payment for your PIN is received by the NMC, restoration usually occurs within 48 hours.
Remember:
✔ Keep your PIN active
✔ Keep your NMC contact details updated
✔ You will not be able to work if your PIN lapses.
