Our Bank Member survey: Providing the support Bank Members need, every day

FEB 26 BM Survey

Our Bank Member survey: Providing the support Bank Members need, every day.

The fourth of the five priority areas identified from the Bank Member survey in 2024/25, was the need to offer Bank Members more support in every part of their working life. We know that without access to the right resources and development, Bank Members struggle to progress their healthcare careers. The survey showed that there are still some who need more support to fulfil their potential working in the NHS.

Your feedback told us:

  • Two thirds of you told us you could contribute more, if you had access to further training.
  • Similar numbers also want more support with career development and planning.
  • Some Bank Members told us that bank work can limit access to training and career progression.

We also heard that while many in lower bands see the Bank as career enhancing, some Bank Members in higher bands can feel it is a “holding pattern”, if not provided with the right pathway to development.

We know as a Bank Member you want to grow, develop, and be supported - just like every other NHS colleague.

How are we supporting the change you need?

Reviewing training opportunities

  • We are reviewing the training available to Bank Members, including providing appropriate access to mandatory training, clinical updates, and further opportunities for CPD.

Providing support on shift

  • We are encouraging Trusts to introduce named support or buddy roles for Bank Members working shifts, to ensure you have someone to turn to for advice or guidance. This will help create a stronger sense of belonging and reduce isolation.

Career development pathways

  • We are reviewing appraisal and revalidation to understand where we can support professional growth.
  • We will work with Trusts to make sure Bank Members are included in conversations about career planning, upskilling, and development opportunities.

What this means for you:

  • You should have greater access to training that builds your confidence and expands your skills.
  • You will see more structured support available while on shift.
  • You will begin to have clearer pathways for career progression through the Bank.

What’s Next:

NHSP will continue to review our training offers and explore ways to support CPD for Bank Members. We are also working with partners to ensure that career development is embedded into flexible working models, not treated as an optional extra.

Bank work is not just about flexibility - it is also about opportunity. By investing in your development and support, we can ensure being a Bank Member is a career choice that enables growth, skills, and long-term success.
