Honor is an Assistant Genetics Technologist at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and has been working with NHS Professionals since December. Find out more about her experience of working in the NHS via the bank.
When did you start working at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust and why did you join the bank?
I started working for NHSP in December and since then have had the opportunity to work with two fantastic teams. I joined the bank because of the flexibility it allows me with my shifts, which is particularly important to me as a university student. With the dynamic climate of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has also allowed me to help in the labs that need support at that point, meaning I have been able to train and become competent in new lab techniques.
What do you love working about working at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust?
I love the team I work with at Sheffield Children's Hospital. They are all so friendly and have made me feel so welcome! They are also really open to broadening my knowledge where possible, such as showing me interesting cases when they arise.
What do you find interesting about your job?
The thing I find most interesting about my job is the direct impact I am having on patient care. It is heart-warming to think how many lives I may play a role in saving in one day, and I think working in a Children's hospital makes that feeling all the more special.
Have there been any high points and low points that you would like to share with people?
I think my high point so far was finding out I had been offered the job. I had been keen to get a job at Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service for a while and was waiting for a position to open up. I was so excited when NHSP were able to set me up with an interview there and thrilled when Prateek told me I had got the job! The only low point I have had so far has been balancing university work with working full time. However, thanks to the flexibility of the Bank, I have been able to easily book shifts around my academic work.
What was it like turning up on your first day?
Turning up on my first day was very exciting, everyone was so welcoming. My department were incredibly organised and had made a plan of my training for that week. It made everything so smooth!
Tell me about the booking shifts and placements, is it easy?
Booking shifts is so easy, the Bank is so simple to use. Booking annual leave is also a breeze! NHSP are always on hand to answer any queries too.
Would you recommend working on the bank to colleagues and friends?
I would definitely recommend the Bank to anyone who is interested in working in the NHS, particularly those who want flexible working like me. I have been given some fantastic opportunities because of it.
Proudest moment working for the NHS?
My proudest moment working in the NHS was seeing the new laboratory I set up go live. I felt so fulfilled knowing I had played a role in improving patient care.
