How to prepare for a Skype Interview

How to prepare for a Skype Interview

Mastering the interview for any prospective role is a big step into getting to where you want to be. Doctors Direct has a lot of experience in interviewing and knowing what to look for in successful candidates, so we have created this guide to help you feel more confident and ready for your interview.

What to expect?

Skype interviews enable candidates and employers to speak face to face anywhere in the world. Interviews will typically last between 30 to 60 minutes, and will be asked a series of questions related to you and the role for which you are applying. You are also given the opportunity to ask questions of your own. This is encouraged as it shows the interviewer that you are interested and engaged with the prospective organisation and or role.

TIP: it’s important to still dress the part. Your interviewer will expect you to have the same standards as you would if you were meeting face to face.

What to prepare?

Considering your surroundings, attire and technical set-up in advance of your interview will help you to alleviate any stressful last-minute issues.

TIP: Check your surroundings – what will your interviewer see? Too much clutter can be distracting. Make sure your location is neat, tidy and most importantly quiet.

Environment

It’s important to think about having a neutral background and to be free of distractions and interruptions. Like any face to face interview it is important to feel comfortable and professionally presented.

You may want to have a drink handy too.

TIP: Create a desktop folder with all the documents you’ll need during your interview including your CV and any research you have done – this way they are readily available, should you need to refer to them.

Technology

It is recommended to test the skype function in advance of your interview by connecting with friends or family. Ensuring your mic, camera and speakers are in working order before your interview should help to reduce any worries and ensure a timely interview.

TIP: Make sure you look at the camera and not the screen during your skype interview. This helps the interviewer feel more connected to you and the responses you give.

Reasonable Adjustments

If you require reasonable adjustments ahead of your interview, please inform gatewaydoctors@nhsprofessionals.nhs.uk.

Research

Researching the location, Trust and role are important to show your interest and commitment to the programme. It also ensures you can make the most of your interview slot. Also try to prepare some questions for your interviewers.

Interview Questions

Questions can vary in interviews, you will want to be able to confidently speak about specific experiences, and your individual input into this. Taking time to think about your personal experiences, where you had an impact on a project, where you might’ve had an idea that came to fruition or your role within a team can help to give structured, purposeful answers.
