Job Purpose    

 

The Mental Health Nurse/Learning Disability Nurse is a key member of the multidisciplinary care team and will have continuing responsibility to:

 

  • Carry out comprehensive nursing assessments and to be responsible for producing individualised nursing care plans for named patients.
  • Co-ordinate and implement the nursing care plan for individual patients and to inform the multi-disciplinary team of progress in the treatment process.
  • Provide leadership to the healthcare worker using supervision and IPR and to work under the guidance and management of the Clinical Manager.

  • Provide primary/associate nurse responsibilities for named patients.
  • Provide reports on patient progress (written and verbal).
  • To supervise healthcare workers through appraisal and supervision.
  • Contact with other health and social care services, plus prison and special hospitals.
  • To work flexibly, including night cover and cover to other units as required.

 

Key Result Areas

 

  • Assessing, planning and evaluation of care plans.
  • Provide and participate in the IPR process and supervision sessions.
  • Assist in maintaining high standards of care and adhere to all relevant operational and Trust policies.Maintain own professional Code of Practice.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a learning environment for students and demonstrate teaching skills.
  • Evidence of continual updating of knowledge and clinical practice.
  • Administration and monitoring of drugs to patients.
  • Provide and participate in a therapeutics environment for patients offering individual and group therapy as required.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
  • Be prepared to work flexibly across areas of the service as required.

 

 

Most challenging part of the job

 

To provide the highest level of nursing care in a challenging environment, dealing with verbal and physical aggression in a safe manner.

 

Participate as a full team member and play an active role in the delivery of a therapeutic service to the patients.

Knowledge and Experience

 

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD)
  • A commitment to working with people with severe mental health problems in a secure environment.
  • Experience and / or knowledge of the forensic services desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good communication both verbal and written.
  • Full driving licence desirable.
  • Must be computer literate, with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook and working experience of Epex or Rio.
