Ward Information

Location: At the front of the Hospital

Speciality: Our Emergency Department (ED) is one of the busiest in England compared to the size of our hospital. We see more than 100,000 patients each year. We will always prioritise seriously ill patients. No two days are the same in ED and it is an incredibly rewarding department to work in

Transport: The front of the Hospital is situated near the main guest car park, A&E is next door to the main entrance of the Hospital

Location: A3 - Site Team

Speciality: Allocation on arrival, you will be sent to the ward where the Trust need you the most, this can be a great way to experience different wards and specialities in the Trust, once you arrive at A3 the site Nursing Team will ask you to sign into the registration book and you will then be given directions to your ward

Transport: Location A3 is situated on the Lower Ground Floor, in Section A of the Trust, each door is clearly marked with their respective location ID's, if you are unsure please ask reception on the right when you first walk into the Hospital who will more than happily assist you

Location: B29

Speciality: The Cardiology department looks after patients with acute heart problems who need inpatient treatment and outpatients who require assessment and treatment.

Location: Zone C

Speciality: A surgical ward taking step down patients from Critical Care, all aspects of emergency and elective surgery including vascular, general, urology are cared for on this ward.

Transport: Charnley ward is located in Zone C of the hospital and extends over our main car park, each door is clearly marked with their respective location ID's, if you are unsure please ask reception on the right when you first walk into the Hospital who will more than happily assist you

Location: A35

Speciality: Alexandra Day Stay Unit is located opposite Maternity and is a ward where patients are admitted and discharged on the same day to recover from an elective surgical procedure 

Transport: The Day Stay Unit is located near our Maternity Unit, each door is clearly marked with their respective location ID's, if you are unsure please ask reception on the right when you first walk into the Hospital who will more than happily assist you

Location: B46

Speciality: Dolphin Ward is specifically for children, a number of paediatric roles work on this ward, if you are Paeds' trained please book yourself into an available bank shift and work a shift on Dolphin

Transport: Dolphin Ward is located in B46, each door is clearly marked with their respective location ID's, if you are unsure please ask reception on the right when you first walk into the Hospital who will more than happily assist you

Location: A3 - Site Team

Speciality: The Duty Team mis the central hub for the entire hospital operations, it is also where all of our pool nurses book into their shifts and are allocated wards

Location: A46

Speciality: Maternity

Transport: A46 is in our Maternity unit,  each door is clearly marked with their respective location ID's, if you are unsure please ask reception on the right when you first walk into the Hospital who will more than happily assist you

Location: Building 6

Speciality: Gibberd Ward is predominantly designed for End of Life patients and/or patients with Dementia, Gibberd is a very nice ward located in one the Trusts out buildings, if you are interested in caring for the elderly or patients with Dementia then this ward is for you.

Transport: Gibberd Ward is in Building 6 which is located at the back of Trust, if you enter the Trust via Gate 3 and continue up the road you will see a cluster of out-buildings on your left hand side, if you are driving park as close to those buildings as you can, building 6 is clearly signposted

Location: C1

Speciality: Harold ward is a Frailty Unit and they care for patients over the age of 75 who require a short hospital admission and need an assessment from our team of doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, to review conditions at home. This may mean that we refer you to community services to provide support at home.

Location: B55

Speciality: Harvey Ward cares for patients requiring specialist treatment in gastroenterology and hepatobiliary and provide high quality care for patients with IBD problems.

Transport: B55,  each door is clearly marked with their respective location ID's, if you are unsure please ask reception on the right when you first walk into the Hospital who will more than happily assist you

Location: B39

Speciality: The Henry Moore Ward team cares for patients undergoing orthopaedic elective and planned trauma surgery. The team is made up of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, a Joint Specialist Nurse, a Trauma Coordinator and Pain Specialist Nurses. They are part of the orthopaedic service within the trust, which is made up of consultants specialising in joint, spinal, upper and lower limbs and hand surgery.

Location: B53

Speciality: The Critical Care Unit is made up of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the High Dependency Unit (HDU). The ward delivers specialised care to patients who are critically ill, or need close observation.

Location: B40

Speciality: John Snow Unit has recently been transformed and accepts direct referrals with an enhanced therapy team to provide short stay care for inpatients and older patients.

Location: C7

Speciality: Kingsmoor Ward is a short stay assessment unit caring for patients with acute medical conditions, whose predicted length of stay is less than 72 hours, attached to Kingsmoor ward is our Coronary Care Unit which has 6 beds for patients who have suffered some cardiac issues

Location: B51

Speciality: Lister Ward leads the way with the care provided to the elderly at Princess Alexandra Hospital, having achieved the nationally recognised Dementia Quality Mark in 2016.

Location: B45

Speciality: On this ward they have specialist respiratory nurses to provide high quality care for patients with complex respiratory conditions across the trust. They also care for patients requiring non-invasive venitlation and tracheostomies. The ward is also supported by health care assistants, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Location: A39

Speciality: Our Maternity unit is truly fantastic, you may have seen it documented in the recent series of 'Delivering Babies' starring Emma Willis, the staff are friendly and helpful, if you are looking for a shift in our Maternity unit then please book into an available bank shift

Location: B29

Speciality: Assessment and Admissions, Fleming ward treats patients with cardiac related conditions, it has 19 beds.

Location: B37

Speciality: Saunders Ward is run by a welcoming and friendly team who are passionate about providing the highest level of care for our patients. They provide care for adult elderly and complex care patients with a diverse range of medical problems.

Location: A46

Speciality: Care is provided for a wide range of conditions to both term and preterm infants. Babies are admitted at all gestations and can require all levels of care including intensive, high dependency and special care. The service is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year maintaining the ability to provide resuscitation, stabilisation and intensive, high dependency and special care after birth. The unit admits approximately 10% of the live births within West-Essex. Approximately 400-450 admissions to NICU per year. We also provide neonatal services to infants who may need to be transferred from neighbouring hospitals due to cot capacity issues. The unit also takes admissions from the community of infants who are less than 10 days of age and the readmission of West-Essex babies or babies within the East of England operational delivery network (ODN).

Location: Eye Unit

Speciality: Ophthalmologists see, diagnose and treat acute and chronic eye problems. Our team consists of Ophthalmologists, Nurses and eye health care professionals such as Orthoptists, Optometrists and Ophthalmic Technicians.

Transport: The Eye Unit is building 8 in the cluster of out-buildings towards the back of the Trust

Location: Within A&E

Speciality: A friendly and lively nursing team that see's 20,000 patients a year in our Children’s Emergency Department. Every day is different, never boring and fast paced. If you enjoy variety ED might be for you. They have recently moved into a new fully refurbished department with an attached PAU

Transport: Paeds A&E can be accessed by turning left immediately before the ambulance drop off zone, as you turn left the Paed's A&E building is immediately on your right hand side

Location: B5

Speciality: Outpatients see people referred to them following an injury or operation. Treatments are given on a 1:1 basis and in our specialist group classes to enhance patient mobility, restore joint movement and muscle strength.Treatments offered include, joint mobilisation; soft tissue therapy; electrotherapy; acupuncture; pilates; exercise prescription; and pregnancy care for those having their baby at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Location: B34

Speciality: A surgical ward with 28 beds, Penn Ward is a sought after ward to work on, it has a reputation amongst staff for being an excellent, welcoming and friendly place to work

Speciality: The general surgery department provides a full range of elective and emergency services, PACU is the Trusts recovery ward.

Transport: Theatres is located on the first floor and PACU is next door to our main Theatres entrance

Speciality: Radiology

Speciality: Ray Ward is an acute medical ward specialising in the care of older patients. They offer individualised care, keeping the patient at the heart of everything we do.

Speciality: Melvin Ward is for Gynaecology patients and is a female only ward.

Speciality: Tye Green is an acute general surgical ward, offering same sex accommodation for both elective and Trauma patients. Tye Green is a 31 bedded ward, providing a wide range of care , across different specialties , including general surgery, vascular, colo-rectal, gynecology, breast, ENT, urology, ophthalmic and orthopedic.
